'Global threat' due to antibiotic resistance

Common infections developing resistance to available treatments; situation will become critical is not addressed.

The World Health Organization [WHO] has issued an alarming report, warning that the current antibiotics being used to treat a variety of maladies are becoming ineffective; it asserts that, without major advances in the pharmaceutical field and changes in how the drugs are prescribed, infections long thought to be conquerable could regain their former vitality, with devastating health ramifications.

"Without urgent, coordinated action by many stakeholders, the world is headed for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries which have been treatable for decades can once again kill."

As part of this report officials compiled data from 114 different countries and concluded that examples of drug-resistance were prevalent in every nation researched; they state that due to over-prescription and misuse of antibiotic drugs, combined with poor procedures in tracking cases of resistance, we are dangerously close to being left utterly defenseless against several deadly bacteria.

The sheer volume of fatal diseases treated by antibiotics is staggering, thus a shift in potency would prove catastrophic; WHO researchers assert that this shift has already occurred, and without immediate changes in how these drugs are administered said-shift will become permanent.
