Koppu hammers Philippines

Slow-moving storm kills two, displaces thousands; still considered a threat despite weakening

Super Typhoon Koppu came ashore this weekend, bringing torrential rains to the Philippines. The storm has killed at least two people, while displacing approximately 16,000 and leaving tens of thousands more without power.

The storm has weakened since making landfall Sunday, though Filipino Authority and relief agencies are warning vigilance is still required. Heavy rains are expected to continue through the middle of the week, especially on northern Luzon island, with localized downpours reaching as high as 36 additional inches.

Typhoon season in the Pacific Ocean is generally between May and October annually, although forecast models suggest dangerous storms could be possible throughout the end of 2015.
